La Garrigue


La_GarrigueThe garrigue is the unique landscape of the Languedoc region of southern France. It is a wild and arid yet fragrant and delicate mix of Mediterranean flora. The flavours and aromas of this wine are reminiscent of the garrigue. It is a special blend of Syrah and Grenache, which are the local indigenous grape varieties grown on the Domaine and whose vines are up to 50 years old. It is a wine of enormous character, which has inspired rather a cult following. We suggest drinking this wine with Mediterranean-style cuisine, barbecued red meat or cheese.

Colour: Deep, dark, ruby red.

Nose: Scents of the garrigue such as aromatic thyme with jammy, red fruit and spicy, black pepper. It is warm, generous and complex.

Palate: Rich and ripe with superb structure and length.

Drink: Now until 2014

Available vintages: 2009/2010/2011

Charles and Ruth Simpson left Blighty to make wine at their Languedoc Estate and almost every one has been a winner. This Garrigue, named after the pine and herb-scented scrub of southern France, is made from the estate's mostly 50-year-old syrah and grenache grapes. Enjoy this gorgeous, hefty, peppery, garrigue-scented wine with barbecued red meats.

This d'Oc wine is a blend of Grenache and Syrah. It has an inky black colour and a spicy nose of cherry, thyme and herbs and a background of cedary, nicely judged oak and black plum fruit. On the palate it is fleshy and fruity, with plenty of crunchy and juicy blackberry and black cherry, and a softening note of sweet, damp earth and briarwood. It is crisp and fresh style of wine, though the makers suggest it will cellar for four or five years. Very good indeed.
