Le Sirocco Chardonnay

E-mail

le-Sirocco-2010Chardonnay suffered a fall from grace due to over-oaking by many wine producers. This one however is bursting with unadulterated real fruit flavours; fresh grapefruit, expressive pineapple and pear, good acidity and a rich mouthfeel. At Sainte Rose we aim to challenge assumptions made about certain grape varieties and where they come from. All we ask is that you give Chardonnay a second chance!

Colour: Pale yellow with a touch of green

Nose: Expressive, fresh and clean with citrus characteristics and hints of grapefruit, pineapple and pear.

Palate: Crisp and fresh with a long finish. Good acidity balanced with a rich quality.

Drink: Now until 2013

Available vintages: 20111/2012

What the critics say about 'Le Sirocco'

From one of the cooler areas, this is an un-oaked version, but it certainly doesn't suffer as a result. There are lovely, pure peach fruits, cut through perfectly with a razor-sharp crispness. It is clean and appetising with an excellent intensity of flavour and a great finish for a wine at this price.

...very impressed by the Sainte Rose Chardonnay. This is an un-oaked version, but it certainly does not suffer as a result. Very ripe white peach aromas – more ample than you might expect – with lots of freshness on palate. This easy-to-like wine should have quite a long life thanks to its concentration.

Jancis Robinson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com

Aromas of peach, citrus and ripe Granny Smith apple, with a touch of leesy richness. The palate too is quite rich and ripe, but stops short of being tropical or new world in style. Indeed, it also possesses a florality and herbaceousness redolent of Sauvignon, with citrus and apple flavours complemented by grassy, herby, minerally and leesy nuances. Actually, as I type, I am noticing some of the same phrases and descriptors as the above wine, which is perhaps an indicator of both the terroir and the house style (i.e. good winemaking). And as a matter of fact, the inherent richness in this wine is nicely offset by some mouth-watering acidity, in a wine which remains focused, all the way to a long, dry finish.
Leon Stolarski, January 2011
This one's a mystery, a Chardonnay that tastes like a cross between a Riesling and a particularly rich Sauvignon Blanc. I served it one summer evening in the Languedoc and the visitors who like Sauvignon loved it, and so did I because it gave me the same pleasure- massively revitalising plus aroma- as Riesling

Jancis Robinson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com , September 2005

If you have tasted the 2004(Le Sirocco), you will know just how good this wine is and, for my money, the 2005 is even better. Very definitely, the best un-oaked Chardonnay we know from this region.

Leon Stolarski Fine Wines, December 2006

The mealliness and richness on nose and palate might fool many tasters into thinking this was a lightly-oaked wine, but in fact it is 100% un-oaked Chardonnay. There is nuttiness as well as succulent, sappy fruit on the nose, before a palate that is beautifully weighted between ripe, pineapple and tropical fruit, and a savoury, almond and cool pear quality. There is lovely fruit sweetness here and fine balance into a long, very creamy and composed finish. Leon Stolarski says "Brilliant value for money," and he is not wrong: this is excellent

...this is a really stylish wine! Hints of nougat are countered by refreshing lemon crispness. Perfect with salmon, ham, chicken and salads

Mary Dowey, Irish Times, June 2004

A textbook Chardonnay that will be used as a benchmark for a later Burgundy tasting

Joseph Berkmann, MD Berkmann Wine Cellars, 2003

A light, fruity, unoaked style but quite rich and smooth on the palate with a lovely fresh, citrussy finish.

David Dickenson, MD 3D Wines, 2003

Palate is very good, excellent in fact. Rounded and smooth ... and perfectly judged acidity. Really very good – no oak, letting the pure chardonnay fruit shine through ...90/100 (outstanding)
